Prunus lusitanica, commonly known as Portuguese Laurel, is a hardy evergreen shrub or small tree prized for its dense dark green foliage, attractive flowers, and excellent hedging qualities. Growing to approximately 4m high and 3m wide, it is widely used for screening, privacy hedges, topiary, and formal garden designs.

In spring and early summer, clusters of small cream-white flowers appear, producing a pleasant hawthorn-like fragrance that attracts pollinators. These are followed by decorative red berries that mature to deep purple black, adding seasonal interest and attracting birdlife.

Portuguese Laurel responds exceptionally well to trimming and shaping, making it ideal for creating dense, formal hedges and structured landscape features. It thrives in full sun to part shade and adapts well to both dry and moist soils. Hardy and drought tolerant once established, it performs well in exposed and moderately exposed locations.
