Dicksonia fibrosa, commonly known as Wheki Ponga, is one of New Zealand's most distinctive native tree ferns. Renowned for its thick, fibrous trunk and lush crown of deep green fronds, it creates a striking architectural feature in woodland gardens, native plantings, and shaded landscape settings.

Slow growing but long-lived, Wheki Ponga gradually develops a sturdy trunk that can support an impressive canopy of arching fronds. Reaching approximately 6m in height and 3m in width at maturity, it provides a dramatic tropical appearance while being one of the hardiest New Zealand tree ferns.

This evergreen fern thrives in moist to wet, well-drained soils and performs best in sheltered locations protected from drying winds. It prefers part shade to full shade and benefits from regular watering and mulching during establishment to maintain consistent soil moisture and encourage healthy growth.
